purple hyacinths as killers

by prasanna   May 29, 2020

two saplings entwined by chance –
you lean on one another, for support,
for warmth, drinking from the other’s
roots when your reservoir doesn’t run
deep enough. you weather the storms
and droughts together, speaking of
how you’d come to blossom
with one another. and in a flash,
your roots rotted away, and your
leaves wither, you break back
down into the earth –

and they remain.
and. they. remain.

I've read all three of your killer flower poems (sorry, that made it sound like a bad b-movie haha) and this one is my favourite. The fact that they were 'entwined by chance' yet are chemically and unconditionally bound to each other is a really beautiful thought. Love it

In love with your new poems (would it be called a series?). Giving each flower such a purpose and story so that it makes my heart ache.

The decision to repeat the lines "and they remain", and have a full stop after each word, was just perfect. And the sense of fellowship, of unity, of building one another up and providing support when there isn't anything to fall back on...

    so lovely and meaningful!
