Breaking The Rules

by Walter   May 30, 2020

It started long ago
When he was only five
And little did he know
Forever now he'll strive

He was happily playing
With his brand new model car
Until it rolled off the table
And didn't even fall that far

But it smashed on the tiles
Instantly fell apart
His tears began to fall
And were felt within his heart

Now it was all broken
His mother became so cross
She would only scold
To show him who's the boss

"Let this be a lesson
That I'll hope you'll undertake
I want you to look after
So all your things don't break"

He sadly walked away
Although with great concern
Hearing his mothers words
A lesson he should learn

But it happened once again
This time he was eight
While out riding his bike
Along with all his mates

They set up a ramp
From a hill they would jump
For a moment he was flying
Until landing with a thump

Both his wheels would buckle
And his frame would bend
His once all shiny bicycle
Which he'd always depend

Lay there all broken
In a great big pile
Of course he knew his mother
Would once again be vile

"When are you going to learn
How much more will it take?
You should be looking after
The things you don't want to break!"

He learnt his lesson now
Treated everything with respect
Listening to his mother
So nothing else is wrecked

It wasn't until late teens
That there was another case
But this time what he broke
Is something you can't replace

A girl that he was seeing
And fell in love with at first sight
She was his first princess
And he her first knight

But after two long years
Their love all fell apart
She cheated and just left him
Alone with a broken heart

His mother soon found out
And a tear for him she'd shed
Knowing that her words
Are better left unsaid

"I'm so sorry my child
And I know this not your fault
But unfortunately for love
You take with a grain of salt"

"But mother!" he replied
I just gave and didn't take
I made so sure this time
That nothing else would break"

She thought very carefully
Before that she'd reply
To try and give an answer
Hoping would justify

"I know and I believe you
But with a heart you just can't choose
You have to risk it all
And chances are you'll lose"

Hearing what she said
But he still felt so alone
And instead wished he'd broken
Each and every bone

He thought he learnt a lesson
His mother always preached of
But it seems the rules are different
When it all comes down to love
