'Little Ships'

by cassie hughes   Jun 19, 2020

Their numbers swelled as did the pride
Of those who sailed across the sea
To brave the bombs and strafing guns
Evacuate and set men free
From certain death ‘neath foreign skies

Those ‘little ships’ played such a part
That always will remembered be
Without their aid all would be lost
For Dunkirk beaches proved deadly
And fear took root in every heart

Miraculous delivery
Was brought to those trapped in despair
Those many hundred private boats
Delivered hope, left defeat there
Sailed back and into history

So now they bob on waters clear
As if the past had never been
Their masts re furled and engines stilled
Once bloodied decks scrubbed nice and clean
Heroic deeds a bygone blur
