Cacoethes (A Sonnet to Unrequited Love)

by cassie hughes   Jun 23, 2020

Pedestal flame I raised you far too high
Unreachable amongst the stars above
Heartsore I watched you spread your wings and fly
Whilst shackled I could only mourn your love

Besotted heart beat races at the sight
How glorious your form unfurled and free
My eyes devour voracious with delight
Yet reason forces futile desires flee

Your incandescence burns too bright a flame
Though moth like I would fly into your sun
Allow combustion gladly to my shame
For single evidence of affection

With bleeding dreams desire now held captive
I grieve the heat you never had to give

To quote a wise boy by the name of Charlie Brown,
“Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.”

Wonderful to see a sonnet from you, Cassie, and such a gem too.

    All the best as ever

Thank you Ben. I must admit to being very nervous about posting this as you are such a master of the form.
