Life's Path

As I look back on the winding road
with many a twist and turn
Those flawed routes and shortcuts
caused my inner self to burn

Fear nibbled sharply at my heels
whispered I would always fail
Those broken dreams and promises
built shackles for my jail

Though clouds cast shadows on my path
and the way was fraught and long
The sun popped up from time to time
to keep my body strong

Throughout the mountains and the vales
wisdom became my treasured loot
Memories were a gift from time
to carry on my route

Despite the many mishaps
I've conducted myself with pride
along the long and stony path
with love's friendship at my side

So as the darkness slowly falls
the sun sinking goes to bed
I think of all the things I've done
without a tear to shed

For I have lived a good life
and I'd do it all again
The same again this time around
the same as I did back then

For if I changed one single thing
It could change my life with you
and I might live a loveless life
without knowing love so true

So long as you are with me
with memories to keep me warm
nothing can ever harm me
I can weather any storm
