Happy birthday Dad

by Ky   Jul 6, 2020

For so long I’ve wondered,
And pondered the thought,
What life would be like,
If yours hadn’t cut short,
Would I have seen you,
A lot more today,
Than I did when I could’ve,
Before you went away?
Would we be sitting,
Father and son,
With beers and the rugby,
Cheering them on?
Would you be settled,
In the grandfather role,
Sharing your wisdom,
From days long ago?
I wish that this poem,
Whilst I reflect,
Was words to say in person,
Not hindsight and regret,
To you my dear father,
On what is your day,
I love you forever,
And just want to say,
Happy Birthday Dad
I miss you xxx

Ky. I found this so moving and I could really relate. There are many things I wish I'd said to my dad and I often wonder how he might have featured in my son's life. Your rhyming is excellent and the punchy pace of your poem suits the language and feel of it.
Really well done and nominated. :-) x
