The Creature

by DarkNDangerous   Jul 14, 2020

There is a creature in the water,
Thats what the towns folk say.
Dangerous, evil, demonic, and bizzare.
Beware and stay away.

No one has actually seen this creature,
The rumors twist and swarm.
Fear bellows through the town,
But I will not conform.

I am not afraid of such creatures.
Maybe we can be friends.
I walk to the water, like everyday before.
I smirk as my body descends.

In this town I feel like an outsider,
But in this abyss I feel at home.
I've scoured for signs of the creature,
But not even a catacomb.

As I swim through it's watery depths,
I don't understand the rumors.
Why do people speak of myths and legends,
Yet also be the consumers.

I lay here awhile and ponder,
While my mind contorts and falters.
They say I need help, I'm crazy.
But then just pray at their alters.

There is a creature in the water.
The one that no one can see.
Odd since they watch the water everyday.
When they are staring at me.

This is excellent and could be interpreted in many ways.
It feels to me like a good old fashioned witch hunt ... society calling anyone who doesn't conform to their ideology 'a monster' while all the 'monsters' are thinking the exact same thing about the conformist society. There's an element of this 'reflection' with the water theme. You don't fear the monster, because you ARE the monster, already under society's microscope.
This could relate to very many things going on in the world right now and I think it's an excellently written and very savvy poem. Really well done and nominated :-) x

Superb. A nicely told monster tale with great rhyming. Very enjoyable and leaves just enough to the imagination.
