A Cup of Tea

by Maple Tree   Aug 6, 2020

I was featherbrained
at thinking you
would untangle
the web around
my feet.

Lies circle across
my face, suffocating
a smile that quivers
in fear.

you stand silently-

holding a tea cup,
sipping slowly.

That last phrasing is staggeringly potent. I know that look well, a kinda of sickly detachment. This is very "poe-esk" (totally ment as a compliment) wonderfully penned.

Wowzers, Andrea! I initially thought the cup of tea would symbolize peace or contemplation. But, instead, that lingering image is tinged with fear. Apprehension. The not knowing and not being able to free from this person. It makes me immediately think of a toxic person, or someone who keeps threatening and using past things against you, and will not allow you to move forward and grow. So you're tied there, afraid to let an emotion speak for you.
