Side Effects of Being Human.

by Poet on the Piano   Aug 7, 2020

Today, I reminded you
that this house will never
know permanent peace.
I warned you that we
cannot heal by staying;
the expired air and muddy
water and oversized hearts
occupying this space are
forever tainted.

This will not change.
He will not change.

You said we'd need
therapy every day for the
rest of our lives if we
continue

and I don't disagree.

I will not die here,
even if that means
surrendering you to the
shadows, I know you
want more for me.

And though you feel
it's too late for you,
I'll leave behind some
string, a tattered map,
anything
for you to realize
this is not the only path;
love should not be
a death sentence.

    I don't know why I felt this was inspired by an abusive relationship. The victim is too broken to leave him behind and start a new life, so she keeps living the nightmare. But she wants the best for her children, even if that means she'll be alone in this.

    "oversized hearts"
    Loved this.
