Nocturnal (Collab with Star)

by prasanna   Aug 7, 2020

The shadow visits me when the moon
unravels his luminous beauty, swaying
from the corner of the room to the foot
of my bed.

It keeps calling me from the ashes
salivating for the moment my presence
would start to fade, as I try to hang onto
poetry and the light the moon offers me.

The larks rouse hours early and their cries
keep me company, a stark reminder of how
the loneliness can creep in. A framed photo
of you sits by the nightstand, I look and
you wink at me.

I hold the photo up to the moonlight;
you beckon me, and I ponder about
joining you, you’ve never looked
happier. The moonlight wanes
as I cry your name.

Dawn robs me of the last glimmers of
you, as I one more time yearn for
the final flight.

To simply put it, magic is what I read when the two of you write together. Your voices mix so effortlessly. I feel the ache in this, paired with the gentle nature of the night. I like how the moonlight ground you, provides you with hope, and the larks help you continue to make it another hour and another hour with their song. One of my favorite lines that stands out especially: "Dawn robs me of the last glimmers of you," and this fills the poem with even more depth, because usually I see dawn as a reminder we are alive, that one can make it through the loneliness of the night, yet here, it's that reminder of reality, of surviving without this person. Without their memory and ability to dream with them. This whole poem gives me a sad dreamy feel, the spirit of this loved one visiting you when you are alone, in the shadow and protection of the night, yet cannot follow you out into the light.

"and I ponder about joining you, you’ve never looked happier." These lines are also very haunting, especially thinking of dreaming forever to be with them, choosing to leave life perhaps to be with them in the afterlife or dreamland or what have you. It also makes me think of how daylight can be cruel to some, exposing everything in the full sunlight, shining light on what is tangible.

You two are amazing, that is all <3
