Breakfast at Midnight

by Sai   Sep 30, 2020

God says sorry he left you.
He was feeling nauseous and

anyway, the music was too loud.
It was giving him a headache.

But listen,

he forgot his coat
in the hallway, he says

he'll be back for it
in the morning.

God says sorry the world
is falling apart.

He's broke. The roof
won't be patched up 'til

next summer
and I'm sorry I left.

I was feeling nauseous and
anyway, the lights were too bright.

It was giving me a headache.
But listen,

I forgot my heart
in the upstairs bathroom,

right next to your aftershave.
I'll be back for it in the morning.

Throughout the week, I kept coming back to this poem and not knowing quite how to comment. This is a poem that's so fresh and unforgettable. I couldn't help but make a correlation between "God" and a father figure in this person's life. As God is often called the father in religious context, I also thought of a human man here, helpless when it comes to the tragedies in the world. He's unable to derive meaning from it. On second read, I thought the mention of God resembled someone in your life who momentarily visited you, gave you hope, was there to comfort you, as someone who knew how much pain the world was in and would not just dismiss it. A savior. Then, I noticed how "you" was mentioned again in the second to next line and that pronoun switch made me think God had left this person, as mentioned in the first line, and they had lost faith in life perhaps, but you came into their life, and will not leave. I see it as God making promises, or saying he'd return (like for the coat), yet knowing that he may not be seen again. And you'll be back for this person, you became vulnerable to them, giving them your heart, and so you have to come back. The lines of the lights being too bright and music too loud made me think of the noise and chaos of the world in general. Of it all being too much at times, so we have to step away, re-evaluate. And what we return is what we want to invest our heart and time in.

I always enjoy your writes, because they have such depth, and often cryptic lines that could be interpreted in various ways.
