Mhamo

by Hellon   Oct 20, 2020

My Mhamo is beautiful,
her eyes sparkle
and her laughter is
like a burst of happiness
filling the room.

My Mhamo said she would not
leave me until her braided hair
came past her waist
and...

I hoped that she would grow taller

but...

as I grew older I knew
that wouldn't happen

so...

every night while she was
asleep my childish hands would
snip as much hair as a dared
from that braid.

I haven't been able to see my Mhamo
for months now

and..

I worry how long
her braid has become...

A lovely tribute to your grandmother. We are blessed by always having their memories with us.

Oh, Hellon. "Mhamo" means grandmother I gather? There is so much emotion and pain in this... and that child-like determination to keep her close and near, whatever it takes. The semblance of the braid is gut-wrenching, and not being able to see our loved ones in the ways we always could is such a cruel reality right now.
