lambs to the slaughter

by Michael   Nov 21, 2020

The wolves of the sea
come hunting the shores.
An organised crime.
An ominous cause.

They promise to take
men, children, and wives
to new pastures green,
for far better lives.

They give you their word
and blind you with charm,
to get them across
and come to no harm.

They tell you they’ll sail
but first, you must pay
a black market price,
before the said day.

They’ll leave you if late
no refund of fee,
and all that you dreamt
will drown in the sea.

on banks of Calais,
they force you on boats
its anyone’s guess
that boat stays afloat!

no conscious they have,
just greed in their eyes
and care not at all
if no one survives.

such sadness in life.
The grief and the pain.
An odious act,
so damn inhumane!

They’ll take you to water
like lambs to the slaughter!

*sadly inspired by the despicable trafficking of families desperately seeking asylum, from France to England*

As I read this I know how lucky I am to not know the utter desperation of having no choice but to go forward. How awful is it that humanity can inflict this on itself.

"wolves of the sea" - an apt metaphor for people who seem not to have an ounce of humanity in them.

    Well written, Michael.
