Launcelot and Guinevere (an homage to Tennyson)

by cassie hughes   Dec 1, 2020

Once true and trusted, best of best
By love was brought to deep unrest
Torn was his heart within his breast
Oh, how he tried to keep steadfast
For Guinevere was Arthurs Queen
And to his king pledged fealty true
Yet siren to his soul she drew
Him slowly without reasons due
To break his vows as passion grew
For Guinevere, his heart’s sovereign

Hit hard he was by loves sweet spell
And fought though lost e’en first he fell
For all his steadfast strength did melt
Under an onslaught nonpareile
Sweet Guinevere knight’s beauteous bane,
When once were kissed her honey’d lips
King was forgot, the world eclipsed
As one they soared in heaven’s grip
Lost to the consequential bliss
Oh Guinevere heart’s chatelaine.

In secret trysts with borrowed time
Their unchaste meetings though sublime
Were chased with danger, royal crime
If were discovered treason ‘plied
For Guinevere by Arthurs court
But souls and lives they gladly gave
To each the other willing slave
E’en though their love would seal their fate
No stopping now until the grave
For Guinevere and Launcelot

Hello Cassie, this is a super piece of poetry inspired by our Alfred Lord Tennyson and, forgive me if I am wrong, a poem of his. Writing to a strict rhyme scheme and implementing meter too, is no easy task. Your poem reads well and I was pleased to see the garnish of ye olde words too - just like he would have used.
Nice work - this must have taken some crafting. *nods head in admiration*

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I have tried to follow the spirit of his poem with this and must admit to finding it more of a challenge than I first thought.
Thanks for the nomination too :)
