Standing Tall

by Walter   Dec 13, 2020

We were once just two seeds
Within the same ground
Though a few feet apart
Where neither was found

Slowly we'd grow
Our roots in the earth
And stems for the air
This was our birth

Leaves began to form
And reach for the sky
But still no idea
That you were near by

Until seasons had passed
As we would both rise
First seeing your beauty
Was total surprise

My branches would yearn
And reach out to you
Though not close enough
And only in view

And then it was spring
The season of love
We're both standing tall
From the ground high above

Your flowers would bloom
Our branches would twine
You've fallen in love
And this was your sign

As years would pass by
Our love became strong
We grew close together
Like we both belong

Until one fateful day
When a man down below
Thought we were too close
And one had to go

With a brush dipped in red
On your trunk he would mark
A bold letter X
With its message so stark

Your leaves would then shake
As I held you so tight
All the years that we shared
And this our last night

The sun would still rise
Though we did not sleep
My last time to hold you
As both our hearts weep

The man came back early
With an axe in his hand
And I couldn't scream out
Nor plead and demand

Though you were silent
I still heard your call
The pain we'd both feel
As you began to fall

Holding tight to your branches
But still torn apart
As if each of your stems
Was pulled from my heart

Now the morning so cold
With dew on my leaves
My heart was now broken
And I only could grieve

The dew began falling
And not knowing why
Until I realised
That trees also cry
