Heart of Stone

by Walter   Dec 21, 2020

Beneath the tree which still stands
Our initials once etched in the bark
Here the start of something grand
And where our love would spark

Both of us young and naive
We instantly fell for lust
Our first kiss under Autumn leaves
Sadly now has turned to dust

Years have passed since I return
And I can still picture you there
Reaching out for you I yearn
Though our hands no longer pair

Instead the bark now old and worn
Not your skin so soft and smooth
My heart still lost and forlorn
Without your gentle touch to soothe

Nor our initials no longer scribed
The bark long over grown
Maybe on your heart they still transcribe
As they were carved in stone
