The Past

by Lena   Jan 3, 2021

They say you can’t live in the past but the truth is you can.

That’s where I am, my house is on the street where we said we would build a home.

Yet choosing to live this way means I am always alone.

The world doesn’t stop just because I’m standing still and I’m waiting for you to come back but deep down I know you never will.

I suppose sometimes once we have experienced pain, or grief, or loss, the pain is at least then known. I often find that people never understand why people cant move on, and I always wonder why they don't see that the past may hold pain, but no matter how painful it is, at least we know it is there, we have already felt the worst of that pain.

Once you have been hurt - being lonely in the past becomes a much safer idea than the idea of ever moving on and being exposed to that pain again.

I totally got this piece and although short, it said a lot that we can all relate to.

Short but full of pain. I've heard so many people say to just "live in the present", as if we can easily transition to that and obliterate our past when we're weighed down by the ghosts of all that could have been. I think everyone has to grieve in some way, for the life they lost or could have had, and they have to process and move forward at their own pace. The reality of the world not stopping can seem quite cruel, when we're stuck and unable to keep going the same way everyone else is.
