White supremacy.

by Poet on the Piano   Jan 7, 2021

This is not a dystopia
or some cataclysmic dream,
but signs of lost democracy
nearing a fascist regime.

The mob that stormed the Capitol
were not protestors with flags,
they were domestic terrorists
with pointed KKK tags.

You say this is the saddest day,
that this is not like us,
but if you knew our history
there'd be much more to discuss.

This is America doing
just what she's always done,
protecting white supremacists
with no backlash or gun.

Cops are taking selfies
with those who breached the path,
since their skin is pale and white
there's no need for a bloodbath.

Due to their privilege,
they'll get a free pass,
while those fighting injustice
face endless tear gas.

The arrests will be few,
as this is what he wants,
for his followers to march
and rebuke anyone who taunts.

Every shade of white
will always be dismissed,
while brown and black tones
will be part of a checklist.

This is in our country's roots,
it won't just go away,
those proud to be American
are puppets made of clay.

Don't speak of wanting peace
without talking about race,
and how white supremacy
is what Americans embrace.

While players took a knee
and others raised their fist,
Black lives were targeted
and told they couldn't exist.

You think this doesn't concern you,
that it's a one-time event,
but ignorance and silence
are simply cousins of consent.

    This is beautifully written.

You can feel the hurt and ache behind the words, one that can be felt by people of all races. Those who are white and do not use their privileges to stand up against the oppressors, the KKK, the people that believe the color of someone’s skin makes them less than they are part of the problem. It is not a “their” problem, it is an “us” problem and I think that is so widely overlooked.

    Well done!

I agree with this entirely. There really is no use pretending otherwise. That is all.

It was disgusting that people got away with so much just because they're white - the news this morning was horrible to see.
This is an amazingly powerful write, well rhymed and has such a strong message.
The last stanza is incredible - It is so full of truth, emotion and rage that it really moved me!
I couldn't agree with your poem more. These are terrible times, but I'm sure that it will get better :)
