If The Key Fits

by Walter   Jan 9, 2021

While walking home one day, I came across a key
I could tell straight away, it didn't belong to me
It didn't look like any, of the other keys I hold
As all my keys were silver, but this one shiny gold

I looked all around, if someone else was near
But it was all quiet, there's nobody near
Except for one girl I saw, walking towards me
So I thought I'd ask her, if this might be her key

'Excuse me I found this, just over there
I thought maybe you lost it, and aren't yet aware'
She looked at the key, and then began to say
'It looks like one of mine which might have gone astray'

She searched in her bag and pulled out all her keys
All of them were golden, it's bound to go with these!
She was pretty sure, that to her it would belong
And asked to take it with her, hoping she's not wrong

Also asking for my number, in case it didn't fit
Any locks that she owns, she'd have no use for it
I didn't hesitate, gave my number and my name
And it didn't take that long, before her phone call came

'I have tried each and every, lock that I own
It looks like one of mine, but for what it's unknown
Thanks for being so kind, your generosity doesn't lack
But if it doesn't belong to me, then I want to give it back'

She asked me to meet her, at a café nearby
Just to say thank you, to which I didn't deny
Though the key's not hers, she appreciates my thoughts
And there we shared a coffee, for both of us she bought

She gave me back the key, as we both sat down
I felt sorry for the owner, somewhere in this town
Soon our coffee came and the key we would forget
Having so much in common, even though we both just met

Staying there for hours and soon becoming night
Talking for so long, we both had an appetite
I offered to buy her dinner, and she agreed to dine
And our coffees were exchanged, for glasses of red wine

Now becoming dark so I offered to walk her home
She was so thankful, didn't want to walk alone
Arriving at her door and she offered more coffee
How could I say no....Of course I would agree

This is how we met, now so long ago
Every romance has a story, and ours you now know
I still have that key, which I found right at the start
And she worked out where it fits...it's the key to her heart
