Stagnant

I walk down the river, where we used to go
We'd sit on those rocks and watch water flow
The sight was so tranquil and the sound soothing
And we were just happy, still and unmoving

But something went wrong and the river would drain
For too many days, it just would not rain
Now I sit here in silence, as I discover
It no longer looks tranquil, when you uncover

The water would hide, what we wouldn't see
Below dirty and polluted, how could this be?
Once a place so peaceful, where we would retreat
But just like our love, now so obsolete

I wonder if you saw this, when we were both here
And realised our love, you'd no longer endear
Then pulled the plug, as you watched our love drain
Where all you then saw, was heartache and pain

Maybe this is why, you chose to leave
And now that I see this, I let my heart grieve
Although it's too late, I can't help as I cry
But it won't save our river, neglected and dry

So much is expressed in the title alone; it really encompasses the theme and the sadness of a love not being fluid anymore. The rhyme here flowed beautifully, as usual, and the metaphor was strong throughout. The line about seeing what the water hides, that reminded me of when we search for only the positives, and refuse to see anything troubling. We gloss over what needs to be addressed. Maybe we've trained ourselves to ignore it, because it's better to believe in this projection of a love that is full and brimming. The pollution, the drainage, everything at the bottom, can no longer be covered up. It's bare. It has to be acknowledged. And I think those moments of reflection can be incredibly hard, never quite having enough closure and now just trying to process it all. So sorrowful, especially in the last line.
