Why I Love Math

by Walter   Mar 27, 2021

Math is a language, although not in words
And I know by many, it isn't preferred
But it does use letters, like A, B and C
To represent numbers, like 1, 2 or 3

There are many rules, I'm sure that you know
BIMDAS or BODMAS, we learnt long ago
But if you're confused, then this is concern
And maybe this language, you'll never learn

We are all taught, what symbols imply
Like square root and sum of, percentage and pi
Now these all have rules, on how they are used
Some of us are left, totally confused

Although it's not hard, just give it try
I'll explain the rules, then you'll know why
A number can be minus, without any fuss
But times another minus and this becomes plus

Zero isn't a number, although it exists
Sometimes you can use it, if you insist
You can multiply, add it and also take
But dividing by zero, is such a mistake

See math is a language, we also can read
When you know the basics, then you'll succeed
It might take some practice, before feeling at home
And is as poetic, as shown by this poem

Well, the poetry is more obvious in the mathematical proofs. I still don’t know how to write proofs! And I’m starting to think that I won’t ever be able to... there isn’t much time during the day to do everything I want plus lack of energy. Oh well, enough of my complaints. I like your poem. Arithmetic is not my forth. Algebra isn’t either. I used to like geometry the most. Then trigonometry. Calculus was okay. But real analysis got me. We can find pure mathematics in it. Oh I definitely didn’t like probability and statistics. But discreet mathematics was okay. Time flies...

Keep on writing, your rhyming is improving.

Thanks Everlasting for your comment and even though you're disliking mathematical proofs, (I loved them!), you seem to have a broad knowledge in all math concepts :) I must admit that I didn't particularly like probability much either but my favorite by far, was trigonometry...

Math was always a struggle from me, in almost every grade, and I would need constant help. I think the only time I ever had fun was plugging in formulas. I wouldn't mind memorizing certain things like the quadratic formula, so once I had that, it was easier filling things in. I never felt a connection with math overall, but what I LOVE reading is your passion for it! It is indeed a language, and that last stanza beautifully summed up your thoughts on math, and (though I never thought I'd say this), the poetic aspect :)

Thanks Poet :) That's the thing with math; it's very precise and you're either right or wrong. And as you say, a lot of people struggle memorizing all the endless formulas. But when treated like a language, I found it so much easier to comprehend and all it's quirks seem to fall in place. You're concluding comment brought a smile to my face!

I'm afraid to say that I absolutely hate maths. As my siblings and I are homeschooled, my older brother and I are taught at the same time, the same subjects. At the moment, we're both struggling through ' algebraic fractions ' . . . Safe to say, we aren't exactly loving it :)
Anyway, I enjoyed your poem, although it brings out painful reminders, lol

LOL - I heard people say this so many times and I think it's one of those subjects you either love or hate. And yes, ' algebraic fractions ' can be daunting when first introduced...but hang in there Keira and soon you'll be mastering calculus & computations! Thanks for your comment and sorry for the flashbacks.
