Brief Travels Back in Time

by Bradley Peter   Apr 4, 2021

The hum of the drum of the washing machine,
Bubbles and bounce, making everything clean.
So many scents that I can never quite place,
But wish I could grasp, and always embrace.
The sun setting on a summery day,
Or when the rising sun hits in a certain way.
Laying on the grass with nothing else to do,
Barefooted and blissed, with a tune or two.
The scent of bread, wafting through the air,
Dangling my legs without a worry or care,
Looking up to see an array of stars in the sky,
Or hearing the distant sound of a train go by.
Curled up cosy in my nice, warm bed,
Waking up naturally with a happy, rested head.
Hot chocolate, thunder and lightning, and hammering rain,
Hearing it's rhythm beating upon the window pane.
All these and more allow me brief travels in time,
Some barely detectable, but all beautifully sublime.

All those things may seem ordinary but how extraordinary they are. Even the sound of the washing machine. I like the smell of clean clothes but most of all the scent of baking bread. I liked the rhyme scheme. Though I kept counting syllables to see if there was a pattern in the beat but I couldn’t find it. Regardless, the poem has good flow.

Nice rhyme in this, along with nostalgic visuals! Definitely reminded me of youth, and how we could easily be blissfully unaware. And content.
