Season's End

by cassie hughes   Jul 7, 2021

In springtime first I spied you fair
and lovely as a fleeting dream
that spoke of new awakenings
if only I had eyes to see.

‘Twas Summer that you bloomed in fullest
glory under clear blue skies
and showed to me the secret coves
you swore were ours alone, you lied.

For Autumn brought the waning of
your love as with the leaves it changed,
tumbled away by stormy winds
to languish under teeming rain.

With winters numbing cold embrace
my folly was at last revealed,
your frozen heart refused to thaw
my dreams were dashed my fate was sealed.

So as the seasons came and went
through sunshine, rain and frigid snow,
where once there lived a carefree soul
embittered spirit cowered now.

A year in which I learned to give,
flew higher than the stars above,
then fell to earth betrayed and lost
all faith in what is oft called love.
