Death in flowerpots.

by Poet on the Piano   Jul 8, 2021

I'm sorry,
I couldn't keep
your plant alive,
though I guess
I never really tried.

It never occurred to me
to water it,
even after walking past it
several times a day.

There's been little rain
for about a week,
and I now notice
the dry leaves
curling up
on the porch.

I take a look
at our tiny garden,
well, your garden really,
and I'm not surprised
to see it's
dying too.

I wonder how long
the stems have
felt suffocated
by the arid soil.

I'm just too used to
things dying.

I really liked this poem with the comparison between human life and plants dying not only for the imaginative view but also because every plant I have in my house dies either due to over or under watering. Milly x

Metaphorically this poem is in a class of it's own. I always love the comparison between humans and plants because it just works for writing. This in itself is a simple yet deep piece of writing.

To interpret this is difficult because my mind went many different ways while reading it. The obvious answer is to take this as shown. Plants die all the time and you have noticed them but just didn't care. So i can feel the sadness radiating through here. Also the person you are narrating for has gone or is away from the place you live.

The deeper thing here is that you are the flower and the way you are talking is that you are losing control of yourself with depression or just sadness in general. You could be reflecting upon a memory or a mirror reflection and you see yourself through this way.

There's been little rain- you haven't been crying much.

You have been curled up on your bed like leaves on the porch.

Either way this is a great poem.

I really like the commas used here as well because each line feels like a story and you let it breathe.

This poem hit me in a different way. Like it was reflecting on this past week on the choices I've made. The plant was them, and I always seem to brush on by.

Never watering it, I wasn't starting any conversation. Always letting them engage first... it never occured to me to say hello first.

A little rain, we've both been crying but it wasn't enough to help us grow into better people, and stem a better relationship. Now we're both out of tears and just waiting for the other to do something.

The tiny garden shows the effort we put, and I've realised how much effort i didn't put in. That it was mostly them and their expectations of me, I failed to meet them. The friendship is dying.

I'm too use for people moving on. And I never really think of it. Weirdly this poem was an eye opener for me. Thank you.

This is an absolutely incredible reflection on it. I love how you interpreted it and reflected on it based on your choices. I think friendships can be extremely difficult to navigate at times... wondering if we should have done something first, if we should have given more, listened more, done more overall. Appreciate your thoughts.
