The Rainbow Princess

by cassie hughes   Jul 25, 2021

Why can’t I be a princess?
Said the youngster to his mum.
I’d love to wear a pretty dress
and flounce round the kingdom.
A sparking bright tiara,
would sit upon my head.
And on my feet the highest heels
shot through with golden thread.

My son, the mother chided.
A princess is a girl,
for you to dress in such a way
would create quite a whirl
of gossip laden chatter
and narrow minded views,
your subjects are not ready
for such controversial news

But mother you have taught me,
to be just who I am.
So why should I now cover up
and live life as a sham?
I’ll proudly show my rainbow,
to the world and face the storm.
What better way to educate,
enlighten and inform.

My darling boy I only
want to save you from the hate
and bigotry I’m worried
that your choice will precipate.
Perhaps it would be better
to keep dresses to indoors
and save those heels and lashes for
Halloween and masked balls.

Nay mother, it is not a choice
but who I really am.
If people can’t accept this
then I just don’t give a damn!
I want to be a princess
and that’s just what I will be.
So look out world I’m coming.
Meet your princess, this is me!
