We Own The Sky

by CJ Maleney   Aug 23, 2021

Sat on the door step with a beer in one hand.
A cigarette in the other.
Nothing on my mind.
And no stresses I need to worry about.
I cast my eyes to the sky.

Already the migration has started.
Birds fly in formation.
Sometimes it's V shaped
Sometimes it's more like a W.

I wonder if the lead one thinks
"It's ok follow me guys"
Probably not but I'd like to think so.
An airborne insect destroyer.

Truth is they're just going home.
How they manage this skill of navigation is beyond me.
But as they fly others dance in the sky.
The Chaffinch and swift float on air drifts.

As as tiny as they are.
As miniscule as they are thought to be!
As distant as they are to me
They are free.

They swoop, dive, twist and turn with absolute grace.

After time they pair off and retreat.
The odd one remains seeking its partner.
They'll nest alone tonight but will fly again tomorrow.

They will know nothing of what we do.
They only seek a mate.
Often a forever mate, dependant on species.

Oh to be a bird.

There's much to feel in this write. Its like after a day's hard work a relaxation takes the mind on a flight, to be free, relaxed and sigh at freedom. A relaxing read, ..
