Sympathy for an Autumnal Leaf

by Paul H   Oct 2, 2021

I watched you from my window
Clinging on for dear life,
Trembling on the thinnest branch
As howling winds cut like a knife.

Your life was draining away,
Veins red raw and bare,
Inevitably you had to fall,
I watched you lay right there

Where my dirty brown boots
Crushed your brothers and sisters,
Crinkled red and golden leaves
Piled up, covered with blisters.

There, resting at my feet
Like a fallen, scarlet star
Your pitiful life reminded me
Of how fragile we truly are.

I really enjoyed the flow in your poem and the last verse says it all for me. Very nicely written!

I'm a sucker for a poem with a kick in it's ending, and I think the last verse here really packed a punch. It summed up the ports thoughts clearly and definitively and makes the reader ponder. Although the beginning was a little forced in terms of rhyme, I thought it grew better as the poem went on and you saved the best til last. Well done.
