A Winter’s Night

by Kate   Oct 18, 2021

Your silhouette’s outlined in the doorframe,
backlit by the television still flickering
Music from Frosty the Snowman and the warm
scent of hot chocolate enters the room
It’s been a beautiful afternoon, one filled with
Christmas lights and decorative ornaments
With tales of Saint Nick, the hanging of
stockings and making wish lists
You’ve broken away from the children, content
with their late night sleepover movie
Exhaustion is written all over your face, but your
gentle smile lets me know you’re content
You climb into bed beside me, your head
finding its permanent spot on my chest
I bury us deeper in the covers, brushing my fingers through your hair until I hear you snore
You’ll never know it but this is when I find you
most beautiful, happy and in my arms

The only feeling I have after reading this is one of being utterly and blissfully content. This poem is so cozy. I think the routines and traditions near this time, like hot chocolate and watching or listening to certain holiday specials, can possibly be overlooked or taken for granted. Sometimes I don't realize till later how much of a comfort it was, then I miss the moments when they're no longer close. And having that person feel safe in your arms, and you in return feel the same, is moving. Especially when someone is relaxed and happy in that moment, and there's that peace, of everything being right in the world and in your heart. Beautiful.
