(you make me hate this city)

This city looks different in the cover of night
No longer crowded with shoving strangers
Quieter without the chaos of the morning
Now desolate and lonely, yet more inviting
A gentle layer of earlier rain coats the streets
Streams of golden orange light their surface
Sirens scream distantly in the background
Matching the tempo as my heels click on
I bury my hands into my coat pockets
Happy for the bitter sting of cold on my nose
I’ve paced these streets for hours, days, weeks
Trying to replace our memories with only mine
But even in the night, which I claimed my own,
Do the places look the same, only dimmer
Do the noises still exist, now much softer
Do the street look abandoned, once full of life
You loved the crowd, loved the noise, the pace
When you left, you took a chunk of my light
We were too different, opposites in many ways
Now you burn too brightly in the day sky
And I can’t risk you burning my skin again
So I stalk the streets at night
Trying to erase you from my mind
