One was imploring
for forgiveness for the crime
he hadn't committed!

This makes me think of situations where a less informed soul is compromised to some extent, maybe even ignorant and childlike. They are at the wrong place at the right time just wanting to fit in. Their more cunning cynical peers had framed them in the crime committed, so this poor sap sits in a police station either knowing or not knowing they did not do the crime but taking the blame for acceptance, approval, and/or becoming something special.

That is where my thoughts went. A movie that comes to mind is The Green Mile.
