Demon and a Devil

by Jack Nightengale   May 15, 2022

Demon:

It's been a week now and we're doing this again?
You probably should've slept back then.
Yet, here you are on the streets with me,
What is it that you are struggling to see?

Your heart rate has been racing nonstop,
Your meds stopped working and it's about to pop.
Your knuckles are scarred and your face is a mess,
Fighting all night, just being reckless.

What happened to your emotions that got you to lock me away?
Who would have ever thought this would be something I had to say.
Endless training, from armed to CQC,
Got me wondering who the devil is, you or me.

But, we're in this together and I got your back,
I won't let your emotion come in and attack.
You got one last chain left to breakthrough,
That's the last shackle that binds you.

Me:

I don't need sleep for what I'm trying to achieve,
Just like wasted emotions, there is nothing to retrieve.
I got my answers and I'm just seeking to be freed,
From all the memories that constantly make me bleed.

I don't feel the pain of all the training we done been through,
And when it comes to demons, that title only fits you.
No one would understand unless they just pretend to,
What good is a Devil if this is all that I can do?

There's a lot to be buried and even more to forgotten,
Not to mention burying the heart that's now rotten.
This week has taught me something I wanted to ignore,
There was never anything here for me, or at least there isn't anymore.

Devil:

So you just set fire to everything and walk away?
Why not watch the fire, that should give you some reason to stay?
You hide when the Sun's out and only come out at night,
You're like a vampire who's afraid of the light.

Me:

Afraid? You seem to be confused,
You must be pretty amused.
It was never meant for me to be within the light,
So I choose to stay with the darkness and chase the night.

Grab your helmet, we're riding again,
We probably wouldn't be if I listened back then.
While we are at it and I no longer have nothing to fear,
Want to find out if we can find that magical 7th gear?

Demon:

Let's go for it and see how far we can go,
I'm a demon so you won't hear me telling you no.
Add a little highway drifting and we can show the angels that they aren't anything special,
Keep this up and I might believe you are a real devil.
