The Things He Took

by 31   Oct 15, 2022

Underneath the silver birch
That stands where two roads cross
I bought a piece of mind
Didn’t care about the cost
Since that day I walked away
I’ve felt this sense of loss
Forever searching for more pieces
Clawing at the frost

Where the spirits wander
From tomb and ancient cist
As lovers search for wonder
With each new partner kissed
Another ghost of memory
That he scratches off his list
Like the teenage runaway
Whose presence won’t be missed

In Pendle fell autumn shadows
No matter if summer sin confessed
A remnant lies near silver birch
When my old man came to rest
Where my father travelled
Within every home he blessed
He left things he didn’t want
And took what fit him best
