Hollywood Boulevard

by James Rockwell   Jun 13, 2023

I’d like to sail the ocean
but i’m sealed
inside my mind.
Yesterday i dreamt
i was someone else,
driving through Hollywood Boulevard
with you by my side.

You loved me then,
you called me “Jim”,
you wore blue velvet
but bluer than velvet
was my mind.

I woke up,
sorrowful.
You’re a vision,
unreal.
Still,

i will love you forever.

I absolutely love this piece and how it reads like the remnants of a dream. The lingering vision, the carefree spirit of the dream where we can be ourselves and where there seems to be no consequences. The ecstatic presence of someone who loves us. Then, the reality of waking up without this person. The loss and grief we feel, yet how they (or at least their memory) are still present in dreams.

I can't get over those opening verses. I think they're my favorite. I feel the pull of adventure, of wanting to navigate so much of what we don't know... yet feeling isolated and stuck in what we do know, in the confines of our mind. Is it to protect ourselves from the unknown or is it keeping us prisoner?
