A Warmer Winter (English sonnet)

by Ben Pickard   Jul 5, 2023

The merriment of summer has at last
Bequeathed its final spell upon my eyes
And so my senses grasp the sanguine past
By seeking out the hills and butterflies.
Those sultry summer days and balmy nights -
The ears of golden corn on rampant fields -
Have left me burnt but craving greener sights
Like summer's dawn and all that nature yields.
'Tis well that winter breathes an icy pause
And freezes us upon the here and now.
When actors leave the stage, they drink applause,
The kind that acting on would not allow.
I let you pass and loathe your passing's pain
But winter thaws and you will come again.
