Tempest Times

by Walter   Jul 10, 2023

I was clearing up my garden
As last night there was a storm
It had left debris everywhere
In every shape and form

As soon as I started raking
Some shapes would catch my eye
Scattered between the objects
Beneath me where they'd lie

My mind began to ponder
With the pieces that I held
While looking at them closely
The more I'd be compelled

Then putting them aside
In bucket that was spare
I cleaned the mess remaining
So no longer everywhere

Proud of all my hard work
When I'd turn around
But I was more intrigued
With the pieces I had found

I walked through the back door
With the bucket in my hand
Then took out all the pieces
That was spread across my land

I placed them on a table
Each piece I would assign
Then moved them in an order
Which would make a line

And when my wife walked in
She would look in that direction
Immediately bemused
At all of my collection

But before she'd even speak
I explained what my eyes saw
With all of these three pieces
Which I carried through the door

The first was rugged bark
From a tree which it was torn
But when it is turned it over
The other side unworn

The second was a stone
Looking quite unique
One side all scratched and harsh
While the other was shiny sleek

And last was an empty shell
Storm damaged it would appear
But still longing for the ocean
When held next to your ear

From where she was standing
She only saw one side
With no clue of the other
And from her they would hide

Too quickly to conclude
Not seeing what I saw
Just the beauty of these pieces
I carried through the door

She said that these look gorgeous.
From the storm they have survived
When I motioned her next to me
It's then she was surprised

And shocked was her conclusion
The contrast of the two
Although it was the same piece
That her eyes would view

So when one has faced a storm
We should never judge too quick
Because we can't see the damage
When eyes are lead to trick
