Ashes of Love

by Walter   Jul 14, 2023

We loved our old fireplace
With flames that would burn bright
When we provided fuel
To let our sparks ignite

We had an old oak tree
We used for firewood
A relationship with nature
Which we misunderstood

As many hours were spent
We relished from the flames
That left us feeling cosy
While the heat remains

Mistaking this for love
With fire in our eyes
When we were feeling warmth
And fell for its disguise

And loves a lot like nature
We might see it all around
But existing in the future
Is harder to be found

As humans can be greedy
And do not always share
It doesn't take that much
Before they'll reach despair

Just like that old oak tree
Although it lost its leaves
It was peacefully living
Until we turned to thieves

When we would take its branches
Providing us our fuel
But while forgetting nature
And its golden rule

The world is finely balanced
Where love is just the same
When you can't always take
Without facing blame

We still have that fireplace
Although it doesn't burn
And left in all the ashes
A lesson we will learn

Our memories that we made
Will now no longer form
Even though we hold them close
No more they keep us warm

When even roaring flames
Will seem to always dwindle
When they're not lit with love
Which once provided kindle
