It is good interpretation. Mahal, but also we exist through our images,, without self images there are no self recognition as any genre of specie, so it also means we exist only if we reflect in others. Like a hero, a martyr, he/she exist for ever because he/she reflect on others life, or oppositely a tyrant, or a slaveholder.
So, what I'm trying to say is that: it is not " sometimes a good thing " only, it is the mean of survival.
