New Phone Number

by Faithless Watermelon   Jan 21, 2024

Oh, stranger friend, I hope we meet again
I want you to know that it didn’t feel bad
To have you there in a shared nightmare
It wasn’t ever said but our hearts are dead
If it wasn’t for an unknown number and a reckless send
I wouldn’t really know if we could be whole again

Oh, stranger friend, don’t be so sad
I want you to know that it didn’t feel bad
When the lightning and the thunder
Was a quiet prayer that hid how scared we are
I might have cried when I was shopping alone
But you let god know that it’s not for show

Oh, stranger friend, I hope you feel better
I want you to know that it didn’t feel bad
To bury my heart in a friend shaped box

~author note: I'm not sure why I feel the need to add a note to this, but I do. This was inspired by Olivia Rodrigo's "get him back!" after a chance encounter at Target. I went in to find something to help with tooth pain and wasn't in a great mood, got a random text from a number I didn't know. The text read, "happy near year alone" with a broken heart emoji. I'm the cheeky sort and texted back.. I said, "I think you have the wrong number! If it helps you feel better, the girl I had a crush on said no :P". This happened to be true, and it was in fact new year's day. I don't remember the exact wording of the response. I'm sure I still have it in my phone. I remember what it meant. This person explained to me that they had lost their partner and that since that had happened, they would text their old number every year on the holidays. My heart sank. I explained that I had something similar happen, and if it made them feel better, not to worry about it. I will never forget this.
