Spelling conundrum

When you look at a word long enough
It becomes foreign and strange
Like is that how its spelt?
You start questioning your brain

The latest such word
That posed this conundrum to me
Was the three letter word new
Made me question my A B and C

I tried knew, no that’s a different word
It means know in the past
What about newe? Wow that just looks wrong
Inside my brain is having a laugh

How to find out? Try googling
Yet what letters to type in?
Niuw with a u, or does it have a silent letter?
Oh god please help this is puzzling!

So I ask what word changed and made you confused
Or has this not yet happened to you?
I'll admit for a time I wasn't quite sure
