I’ve been waiting here a long time
Almost twenty summer suns
I’v watched time stretch out before me
Heard the silence of the guns
I watched them gather up our comrades
The ones maimed and ones that fell
And I saw the abyss open up before me
Which carried them to heaven or to hell
I never have left my lonely post
Through all the storms and all the rain
Through the snow and the blizzard
The silence enough to drive a man insane
Yet in this madness today I can see you
A parade to welcome your return
A dove of peace upon the banner
A reminder the home fires still warmly burn
Today it’s my old fire that is dying
A spark dampened by two decades of decay
I know if I lose my paths in darkness
You’ll still somehow be there to light the way
