The Boogeyman.

by Poet on the Piano   Aug 10, 2024

He's not real.

I tell myself again and again.
I write it in ink on my arms.

He's not real.
He's not real.
He's not real.

Don't let him trick you.

He'll try to trap and frighten you,
molding you into what he wants.

Don't give him power.

You know the truth.

Just because you've felt safe with him before,
wanting him to hold you in his arms,
it doesn't mean he's safe forever.
Your vulnerability will become your downfall.

Bearing your soul will only make it harder to walk away.

That's how you fall into the dark.
That's how he snatches you up
and keeps you frozen in time.

Don't forget the times he hurt you.
Don't forget the shame he surrounded you with.

He'll make you feel like you can trust him,
with no judgment in his warm eyes.
You'll ease into it too quick and miss the warning.

You know better than to let him, or anyone, in.

Don't even utter his name.

Remember who is real.
