Identity

by a broken smile with a broken heart is a poets life   Sep 16, 2024

My tears roll
and my mind screams.
Another day of acting
Another day of normalcy.

I can’t keep wearing
this heart on my sleeve,
You take it,
break it and toss me aside.
A sorry as an afterthought,
And the behavior never stops.

I'll keep quiet,
And take the pain.
I will welcome it
with open arms.
Like an old friend,
I'll let it in.

I will keep smiling,
Conform myself
To this fake happiness.
I'll believe in it while
My mind breaks.

Pride? What pride.
It's not allowed.
A whispered taboo
Among these walls.
I can hold my tongue.

I'll lose my identity,
my dignity and pride.
I will sit here and lose it all,
And best of all
We will continue
living in this fabricated lie.
