The cost of a moment.

by shadows of saber   Apr 12, 2025

I messed up again—
Not by doing wrong, but by feeling right.
I let myself enjoy the world for a while,
Went a little too far on a nature walk.
Now I’m crying in agony,
Unable to walk.

The lake was shimmering—
Light dancing on tiny water ripples.
A gentle rush of river-song,
Fairy-wrens flitting like sparks of joy,
Dancing from tree to tree,
Chirping as if the world had no sorrow.

I breathed deep the crisp, clean air,
Dunked my feet into the stream.
Sat on a stone beneath a great tree,
Its branches shielding me from the sun’s harsh kiss.
Tadpoles wriggled in shallow pools,
Turtle heads bobbed above the surface—
Little lives living freely.

I stared into the water,
Wishing my pain would drift away with the current.
But it only grew heavier the longer I stayed.
The stone was too hard.
There was no place to rest my back.

Still, I endured—
I just wanted a moment of peace.
Just wanted to feel alive.

But I pushed too far.
And now I pay the price.

Please, painkillers…
Please kick in.
Because I can’t hold back the flood—
Not just the pain in my back,
But the pain within.
