Tortured Devotion

Tortured Devotion

Sitting alone on a beach of black sand
Holding and sifting the grains in her hand
She had no place to go, nowhere to stay
She couldn't go back to where she ran away
She knew that she was lucky for a second chance
But now and then she came here for a backwards glance
She was feeling for him, though a different emotion
It pained her to think of her tortured devotion
The scars on her back kept her clear from distraction
She knew in her heart that she'd had to take action
He persuaded this girl with the attraction of wonder
He promised her a life with only stars to live under
She'd loved to impress him; her intentions were whole
She'd devoted her honesty, her heart and her soul
By the time her heart knew to understand fear
He'd already proved that he was insincere
It took her a while to filter through the debris
And find the last remnants of her dignity
One thing she'd learned from him, one piece of advice
For popularity security is too high a price
She pushed herself past this because she always knew
That those clouds would clear to let the sun shine through
But now she's there sitting with new wings to fly
And thinking of the memories that make her cry.
