Too Much, Too Young

by hayley williams   Jul 20, 2004

That night started like many before
But ended with the tragic death of a teen
The most popular girl at our school
For years who had been the prom queen

It was a Friday night at a local party
The end of term celebration had begun
People singing, people dancing
Everyone getting together and having fun

Some people from our year at school
Had brought along their own kegs of beer
We chatted and laughed all night long
Not aware the consequences would be severe

We were just teenagers acting our age
Just relieved to see the end of the school year
Who knew the risks of drinking were so dire
The price of a life so young is just too dear

I saw Marissa sat in the corner with her friends
Keeping a bottle of vodka to herself all night
She was quickly getting drunker by the minute
Before long she slowly began losing her sight

People began to notice that Marissa wasn’t right
Her friends tried to persuade her to stop drinking
She just nodded and lifted the bottle to her lips
But it was obvious by then she was passed thinking

Marissa’s boyfriend Matt, captain of the football squad
Carried her upstairs and fully clothed put her into bed
If only we had the foresight to know what would happen
One of us would have stayed by her side instead

We all carried on partying all through the night
While upstairs in the bedroom Marissa was near death
A beautiful and talented girl who was loved by all
Was at the tender age of just sixteen, taking her final breath

The next morning when we tried to wake her up
Her body was already cold, her eyes were open wide
Marissa had suffered a fit and choked on her own vomit
Because of alcohol the queen of the school had died

Her parents were told by the local police sheriff
That their baby girl they would never see again
Her father sat in shock, his life had fallen apart
Marissa’s mother screamed and became insane

Her brother, at 7 had his whole world destroyed
His life would never ever be the same as before
He would constantly wake to horrific nightmares
Knowing that his sister wouldn’t come home anymore

The whole school felt a giant hole had now formed
Marissa’s group of friends went their separate ways
Some of them just dropped out of high school early
And others just carried on walking around in a daze

One of Marissa’s closest friends, a girl named Danielle
Decided to commit suicide, choosing to slit her wrist
She couldn’t face life being alone having no best friend
Now there’s two teenagers whose lives have ceased to exist

Two families totally destroyed in this double tragedy
And so many lives which would never again be the same
Two white undersized coffins lying side by side
With only a bottle of vodka being the source to blame

Such a tragic event... heart-wrenching for sure. You two did an awesome job telling this story which I know is true somewhere even if not in your lives. I know that I could tell a very similar tale.

Keep up the good work...both of you.
