A Night at the Fair

by Lauriel Chambers   Jul 24, 2004

July the
twenty-fifth
two thousand and three

The night was warm
and it
had fulfilled her fantasy

'Cause she was in a car
with the guy of all her dreams
they weren't going far
but time is never what it seems

'Cause every moment they share
is a highlight of her life
seconds feel like years, where
she can have him by her side

So they arrived.
Their destination?
The local county fair

He was her prize
her inspiration
and she loved to have him there

The brightly-colored
flashing lights
from all the rides
were glaring on them

The moon, the stars
to light the sky
and shine so bright
upon them

The sweetened scent
of funnel cakes
began to fill the air

One look at him
was all it'd take
to fall in love right there

They saw so many
children smiling
but no smile
was big as hers

'Cause she had never
been so happy
that her pulse
was getting worse

Each time they passed
those cuddly teddy bears
just waiting to be won

She longed to ask
if he would mind or care
to try and win her one

So she could take it home
and think of him
and sleep with it
each night

And she would never
have to be alone
'cause she could hold
it tight

But instead
they chose to laugh and scream
on every ride they could

They threw their hands
up in the air
to her,
life felt so good

'Cause she had sat
so near him that
her arm was touching his

Side by side
on every ride
how wonderful that is

They shared a stick
of cotton candy
and she savored
every bite

Of course it wasn't
sweet as he was
but that would have been
a sight

They strolled around
the carnival
and saw a stand
with fake tattoos

He finally found
himself a skull
but that for her
just wouldn't do

So she picked out
a butterfly
and on her left arm
it was placed

They headed to
the ferris wheel
found the line
and took their place

As soon as they
were seated
she was right up
next to him

She still could not
believe it
she could really touch
his skin

She was no longer
dreaming
it was real
and he was there

The colored lights were
gleaming
she could feel
wind move her hair

On the top they sat
and waited
as the others
found their seats

As they overlooked
the midway
everything was
bittersweet

She had a strong
desire to kiss him
but she kept that
to herself

It would be wrong
for her to kiss him
or to say
just how she felt

'Cause she knew
he wasn't feeling
anything
she felt for him

It was true
but she was dealing
'cause all they'll ever be
is friends

But as he flashed
his perfect smile
all she could do
was just imagine

How incredible
just for a while
it'd feel if this night
had been

A date
a chance
for true romance
how amazing
it would be

To laugh
and dance
while holding hands
and kiss
where no one could see

She snapped back to
reality
as the wheel came
to a stop

She felt a love
he'd never see
and this night could
not be topped

So as they left
and said good-bye
they stood beneath
a starry sky

She tried to find
a reason why
her heart could not
forget this guy

Away from her
too soon he turned
and it was then
she finally learned

No matter what
her heart would yearn
her fire for him
will always burn.
