When the rain comes

by alfie   Aug 4, 2004

I trace the path of the raindrop,
along the window with my finger,
i watch it reach the end of it's life,
and for a second, on the ledge, i watch it linger.

it's life is so short,
from the air to the ground,
the supple raindrop shatters,
without the trace of a sound.

the motion of it falling,
and the ease with which it breaks,
reminds me of my fragile heart,
and that it was you who caused the aches.

your sweet words swept over me,
like a gushing river flowing downstream,
they swallowed me up and made me,
the happiest I'd ever been.

we laughed and teased each other,
so naive and so carefree,
yet the storm clouds which had been building,
were about to be set free.

lets just be friends you said,
like the thunder to the lightning,
you left me standing alone in a world,
where i had never been so frightened.

at first i was so numb and stunned,
like the heat of dry thunder in summer,
had i said or done something to upset my love,
but i found out there was another.

so then the rain came,
as torrents of tears flowed down my cheeks,
how easily i had been replaced,
this monsoon season could last for weeks.

so i sit here tracing raindrops,
down the window with my finger,
will the sun ever shine again,
or for a little longer will the rain linger?
