Nothing More Than Friends?

by Ten Feet Tall   Aug 7, 2004

He and I are just friends,
And have been since forever.
We know everything about each other,
Everything there is to know.

He knows I hate dances,
But begged me to go anyway.
It was my first in over two years,
And he could tell I wasn't having fun.

He used this in his favor,
So he could take me somewhere.
He grabbed my hand and we went outside,
Got in his car and drove away.

We stopped at my house and his.
I was told to get blankets and dress warm.
I didn't know where we were going,
But I had to trust him.

We drove for a while,
And then stopped a few towns later.
We grabbed the blankets and a radio,
And walked down to a beach.

We spread out the blankets,
And started a fire to keep warm.
He said he needed to talk with me,
But something else had to be done first.

I've never danced with him before,
And that's what he wanted.
We danced cheek to cheek to a slow love song,
Barefoot in the sand.

The radio then cut out,
But we kept dancing anyway.
The silent stars above us,
As the water slowly drifted in and out.

After the dance we laid down on the blanket,
Staring up at the bright moon and stars.
Then he told me he needed the "talk" again.
How I dread this talk.

The one I always have with him,
Every once in a while,
The one that starts with him liking me,
And ending with me talking him out of his feelings.

I've always talked him down before,
But when I started that night,
He told to be quiet,
My imperfections couldn't stop his feelings.

He talked for so long,
What he said really surprised me.
His heart was set on me,
And that he liked me for who I am.

By the end of his speech,
His arms were wrapped around me,
And my head was on his shoulder.
Everything was so calm around us.

I knew what was coming next,
It was all a plan that night.
He leaned in for the kiss,
But I had to pull away.

I couldn't do it,
He is just a friend.
And we are nothing more,
Than just friends.

Very well written. Excellent storyline. I was intrigued by the strength of character that was exercised to keep from stepping over the line and jeopardizing a valuable friendship.
