My Little Girl

by Bryce Ellner   Aug 8, 2004

She said her first word today
It was "Dad"

I remember when she so small
And the world seemed so big.
And it was just me and her
But somehow we made it.

Now I'm watching her grow up.
And I'm actually crying now,
Because she's going to fast,
And I can't keep up.

She bought her own shoes today,
Bright pink with silver laces

Soon she's going to be gone
And I'll be alright
But I'll worry about her
Even though she wont need me then.

...

She looked down on me today
She was beautiful...
And just before I left
I heard those three...simple...words.

And then I was gone,
And still am today.
But I still watch her even now
As I always have...

My darling little girl
So smart and full of life
And now with her own little girl
Who is growing...just as fast...

Alot of people have sent e-mails to me asking if I myself actually do have a daughter and the truth is I don't. The reason I wrote this poem was because I used to take care of my cousin when she was really little and looking back on my relationship with her, I was often more like a dad to her than a cousin or a friend. So in this poem I tried to imagine what it would be like if I had a little girl and this is what I came up with.
