Daddy Didn't Care!

by Sammie Moore   Aug 8, 2004

That Christmas night was cold
There was nothing to eat
I sat with my brother
Trying to conserve heat

Daddy was sleeping, his friend was there to
Warm in their beds
Would he even care
If baby and I were dead?

That answer came later
With a knock at the door
Daddy's friend ran and hid
Leaving us kids on the floor

The knocking got louder
Daddy woke up
He answered the door
Baby was scared, so I gave him his pup.

It was the police
Daddy's friend disappeared

Her ran out the back door
Three police men followed
A lump grew in my throat
One that couldn't be swallowed

I can not remember what happened next
But I remember a loud BOOM
Daddy's friend had been hit
I carried baby into daddy's room

We lied down in bed
Listening to dad screaming
I closed my eyes
And pretended to be dreaming

Daddy did not care
He put us in danger
He tried to have us sleep
In a room with that stranger

Daddy's friend; our stranger
Had just escaped from jail
Daddy told us this
My face just went pail

Daddy's friend was in jail
For raping a little girl
Just thinking about what could have happened
Makes my stomach curl

That man was very "friendly"
He followed baby and me all through the house
But when those police men came
he hid like a mouse

I thank God everyday
That those police men were there
To think of what may have happened
Just gives me a scare

As much as i cannot stand police and the way they abuse their authority (not all, im not generalising just judging from personal exp) BUT this poem opened my eyes a lil - im glad they were there for you and your brother and i hope you never have to go thru that again!
